We took the sleeper train to Ayathaya from Lampang. The second
class bunks were surprisingly nice, but none of us got enough sleep, so we were
exhausted arriving at Ayathaya at 5:00 am.
Ayathaya was the capital of Thailand for over 400 years starting in approximately 1300. Thus there are numerous ancient temples and the royal palace ruins. Some of the ruins are in significantly better shape than others. We visited a few, but were most impressed with Wat Phra Mahathat and Wat Phra Si Sanphet dating from about 1375, and the Wat Mongkhon Bophit dating from about 1650, which houses the largest golden sitting Buddha.
We stayed in a very nice guesthouse with a pool, and our room had
a loft where Axel slept. The pool was great as the heat was sweltering, about 38
C midday. The last night we had a fantastic Thai meal at Sai Thong Restaurant
overlooking the Pa Sak River.
Cheers,
Julie
