everything is edible

So today we decided the most commonly asked question amongst us is "What is that?" followed immediately by "So can you eat it?"
Everything you look at is food here. There is an abundance of fruit and most of the critters you see are edible. For example, Scott was looking at a weed like substance beside the road and said "this smells like an herb." It turned out the basil, so we picked some and brought it back to the boat. I saw a spiral shelled crustacean while snorkeling and thought, "I wonder if that is edible?" It turned out to be something like a conch that they eat. And the goats that roam around sometimes end up as supper.
We have eaten a huge variety of fruit, such as bananas, papaya, limes, oranges, mangos, starfruit, …. They have massive grapefruit, which they, and we now, just call pamplemousse. From the pamplemousse we have concocted a delicious adult beverage we call rumplemousse. Today we cut open sprouting coconuts, the inside is completely filled with a light and fluffy cotton candy like substance that tastes like coconut meringue pie. Although we found out if you try one that is not quite at the right stage, it tastes like soap.
We had a fruit that was green and spiky, not sharp spikes, but very bumpy, that when it was extremely ripe Harrison mixed with whipping cream and chilled in the fridge. It tasted like ice cream.
As for meats, we have eaten goat, turtle, wild pig, octopus and lots of fish varieties. Gigi is getting more leery of the meats, but more adventurous for the other stuff. Last night she ate baked breadfruit. And Angela has decided she is no longer a vegetarian.
We had dinner last night at a local Marquesian family's house. They served "poisson cru", which is raw fish marinated in lime juice, coconut milk with onions and tomato. They also had an amazing chicken with a gravy-like sauce, fried bananas, green papaya salad, breadfruit, rice, baguette, fresh lemonade, and topped off with coffee and pamplemousse for dessert.
On our walk back from dinner we saw these huge land crabs and debated about catching them to eat. We all decided we were too full, so the crabs got to live another day.
It has been quite a culinary treat. Can't wait for the next adventures!

  1. Great to be able to keep up with your adventure. Makes everyday life here seem a bit ordinary, but very cool to get the live feed from you guys while you are in the middle of it.
Gary, probably has already heard, but if not, Tony Gwynn passed away last week and it has been the buzz of the local sports news. The padres also fired GM Josh Byrnes this last weekend. Can't really think of any other news here worth passing on. Safe travels.. and continued ventures.
